no firing during holiday seasons

Some say christmas is not felt in davao...something that is best described by Mar Roxas's political slogan, "di ko ramdam." No fireworks,no hissing watusi, not even a "bomb" joke is shared. Not even a single pop of inflated paper bag is heard anywhere.
So what if others may say "di ko ramdam ang pasko sa dabaw" . We dabawenyo's have learned to live with it, anyway. With firecrackers banned, we are sure we will celebrate 2010 with lots of food, complete set of 13 lucky fruits. Most importantly,  we surely will welcome the year of the tiger in one piece.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!

MAHUSAY TALAGA ang pinoy

They say cartoonists are a dying breed. we don't thrive  in colonies. we are many things all in one.artist and a writer, stoic and ridiculous, satirical and damn seriousfunny and fun to be with..  So be it. these make us unique anyway. it's true, sir buboy... MAHUSAY ANG PINOY!!!

The first 100 years of PHILIPPINE KOMIKS and CARTOONS

My pressssciouusss… the first 100 years of Philippine Komiks and Cartoons
I got hold of this book before it’s even sold at the National Bookstores nationwide and it makes me even prouder and happier. ‘got this from Boboy Yonson, the publisher and the present president of the SAMAHAN NGA MGA KARTUNISTA SA PILIPINAS (SKP).
All complete with his authentic doodles and signature.
Thanks to a dear friend, CHECHE, a fellow senior air traffic controller assigned at the Manila Area Control Center who is boboy’s best friend. (che is a brilliant photographer whose works can be found at www.ladyairbus.multiply.com)
This book is some treasure indeed!! Aliwan, Pinoy Klasiks, Wakasan, Funny Komiks, atbp… Flipping through each page reminds me of those times when I was in the elementary grades, tracing the works of the then great komiks illustrators. I learned from these masters. I never get tired drawing and redrawing their characters.

I NEVER  regret buying this book.

(you may buy this book from national bookstore @ P1,500.00)

kamayo mindanao foundation inc...

Kamayo Mindanao Foundation (KMFI), Inc. formerly known as Kalisud Mo-Tabangan Ko Micro-enterprise Development for Community, Inc. (KMFI), paying homage to where it all started-Lianga, Surigao del Sur. Kamayo represents one of the indigenous people inhabiting the province of Surigao del Sur.
The foundation is an embodiment of the Enterprise Bank's Corporate Social Responsibility. However, beyond the slogans of development and beyond the statistical data of poverty and inequality, KMFI aims to demonstrate its services by putting a human face to development.
KMFI believes in Amarya Sen's argument which states that economic development is only a means and not an end itself and that human development is best articulated by improving the social conditions of the poor through capability approach.

beating the deadline

water or electricity

I received an email from sir tony ajero a.k.a “ama” to make an editorial cartoon about HEDCOR and the DCWD (davao city water district) dispute over Tamugan. That time the city was torn between two lovers… errr…two issues since both companies made legit claims as to the rightful use of the river.
DCWD incessantly drummed up that water was more important while the HEDCOR claimed the same with electricity.
Blast!!As long as they won’t charge the public exorbitant charges for water and electricity use the public won’t be subjected to suffer “death by water torture and electrocution
A picture was attached to the mail. It was the picture of DCWD Manager Rhodora N. Gamboa
Being a good soldier that I am, I started sketching the editorial cartoon. Though I was also torn between who should be the villain and the hero in my drawing (uhh… obviously, my drawing betrays my leaning..)I was generally inspired that it took me just 30minutes to finish the editorial cartoon. (scanning, photoshop imaging and making final touches in corelDRAW).
It was kinda hard for me to make caricatures with women as subjects… women faces are very “sensitive” to exaggeration lest the subject will look like a man. Not fair.
I can draw and make caricatures of men effortlessly. (just add a bloated belly …stretch the nose wider, make the mien hard and chiseled, ok na. Bassta madali lang magcarricature ng lalaki.)
With only a photograph as reference, the 30 minutes went along just fine. However, when the drawing was done I still got one problem left.
I need to see my subject in person to confirm my illustration.
The following day, I called the DCWD office at 8:00 in the morning and requested for a two minute appointment. Bless the secretary for making me “singit” in the Manager’s very hectic schedule.
I was summoned inside the office and saw the subject in person. I did not wait for her to ask me why I insisted on such appointment. I handed the final drawing for her to see and I said” all I need is a two minute appointment so see, feel and observe the subject.”
She examined he caricature, smiled and said something I can no longer remember what.
I left the Manager’s office in less than two minutes. I drove directly to a wifi cafĂ© at Victoria and emailed my work to edgeDAVAO  (www.edgedavao.net).
Great.
No revisions on the drawing were made at all.

paskong dinabaw
